I found this wooden letter on clearance for $3 a few months ago and thought it'd make the perfect base for a collage of some type. In an effort to economize my Christmas gifts and make something special for my nieces, it became a Christmas gift. It already had a wall hanger on the back and being wood, I knew it would hold up nicely. It was red so I spray painted it black. Then I printed off black and white pictures of my niece growing up, including several of us together, and used mod podge to glue them on. It turned out looking better than I thought considering I used regular copy paper. She loved it.
Cute idea! I love it! This is something my sister would love, I am def going to have to make one for her!

ReplyDeleteHobby Lobby has lots of them...hopefully you are lucky enough to live by one. I live in Oceanside, California and one finally came to Temecula which is about a 40 minute drive for me but worth every minute and mile!!!!!

ReplyDeleteThe letter was found on clearance at Marshall's. It was wooden but I know Joanns sells large paper mâché ones.

Thank you for the inspiration! I made one for my step son's grandparents for Christmas. One question tho, I tried to put a black border around it like you did, but it's all crooked, haha. How did you make your's so even?

ReplyDeleteI saw this idea earlier today and kept thinking about what I could do with it, then happened to be in TJ Maxx just a few minutes ago and found an "A" and and "M" - the only two letters they had, in black and grabbed them quickly. My son Adam, is getting married to a terrific gal by the name of Marilyn - PERFECT!

Its really an art to construct such Photo Monogram Letter, for sweet memories, I would like to construct like this and Send gifts to Pakistan from UK.
ReplyDeleteI tried making this for a shower gift for my sister in law. Both times I have tried, it has turned a greenish color. First time, I used Alene's Spray Adhesive and then modge podge on top. When that didn't turn out. I peeled it all off and cleaned it really well with a damp cloth. I then used modge podge as the adhesive and then put a thin coat on top. I used the glossy kind of modge podge. Could that be why? Or maybe different printer ink? I am using hp. I let the photos dry for several hours before cutting and putting on the letter.

DeleteI'm sorry this hasn't worked out for you yet. Like I said, I was going to use photo paper but regular copy paper worked out fine so I left it as is. I'm guessing if yours is changing colors it is your ink and/or paper. Maybe print them and get copies made somewhere with toner rather than ink. Or print photos. Good luck!
Thanks. I just tried printing two photos on photo paper and modge podging them to paper. Waiting to see how they dry. My ink is low so I am wondering if it is not printing right. The pictures look good though before adding the modge podge.

ReplyDeleteI used mod podge and put a light layer on the wood. Then I pressed the papers down gently. I didn't get any wrinkles. I've found that wrinkles on projects like these come from too much glue and the paper getting too wet. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteI did this 2 years ago has a Christmas present. however I did not spray a black border on it, instead I continued pictures all the way around the border. it was very easy to do. I got the letter from Joann Fabrics, it was made of pressed cardboard, I put it on a layer of mod podge on the letter itself, placed the copy paper picture on, then when all photos were in place I put a layer of the mod podge over the entire letter.
