Snowman Kit
We had a "Super Saturday" craft day at church last month and I signed up to make a snowman kit. They supplied an example and I don't know if the woman came up with this design herself or copied it but I thought it was very cute. We sculpted eyes, coal (for the mouth), a carrot nose and three buttons out of sculpey clay. Then we attached dowls to the back of each piece and baked them in the oven. I'll just add a scarf and hat and we'll be set when snowman season comes. It's snowing today but there's not enough on the ground for playing the in the snow just yet. Here are my finished pieces stuck into cardboard. When we build our snowman, I'll post an updated picture.
Added December 12th: We've had a few weeks of snow so here's our snowman put together. Now I just need to find a good hat.
I love it! Too bad it rarely snows here!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea! That really is cute.
ReplyDeletehow long did you bake them in the oven for and at what temperature? Those are really cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you use to make the pieces?
ReplyDeleteThey are made of sculpey clay. I followed the directions on the package for baking. I think it was something like 20 minutes at 250 or something. They clay was attached to dowels then baked.
ReplyDeleteDid you just push the dowels into the sculpey? Did they hold up, or would you attach them a different way (hot glue?) next time?
DeleteWe added twisted wires on the ends of the dowels, pushed them in, then covered that with more clay. Some stayed, some have come out and I've hot glued them. After being in a wet snowman, I'll need to glue them again. So, I don't have a great solution. But, they work.
DeleteTo be more specific, the coal and the carrot are fine. The flat pieces have been the ones to come apart, but not all of them.
DeleteSo, you attached the dowels FIRST? they were okay in the oven?
ReplyDeleteYes, they were fine in the oven.
DeleteFantastic idea! Now if we get snow here like we normally do, I'll be making these!
ReplyDeleteWe rarely get snow here in the desert, but when we do, the snowmen don't last long. The faces are the first to go. This will definitely help! I can't wait to make some. Pinning. I hope you’ll link this up tomorrow at One Creative Weekend on OneCreativeMommy.com. (The party is open every Fri-Wed.)
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could use those metal frosting rose turners cake decorators use and form the clay around them. Hmmm. Very cute idea though!
ReplyDeleteOr maybe some shank buttons with stiff wire
ReplyDeleteGood ideas! Thanks.
DeleteSuch a fun neighbor idea instead of another plate of cookies! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to make a set for my twins' Kindergarten teacher as part of her Christmas gift. We don't always get snow here in Oregon but I know when we do she'd enjoy using this with her 3 year old son. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOr maybe put a screw in the ends of the dowls so the screw is covered with clay on both sides. Maybe that will keep them in place? :)
ReplyDeleteI would like to do this with my nieces and nephews. All 13 of them! I'm not sure how much sculpey clay to order....any suggestions.
ReplyDeleteHow fun. I'm pinning!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this. I live in Australia and my children entered a snowman building comp and I based our snowman on yours, sadly though ours was on the ground as they gave us ice chips to make a snowman, not snow. I used paper and laminated it, and used pipe cleaners hot glued on the back to stick it in. The children loved the eyes. We used a real carrot, and at the end my youngest son ate it :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Hoping to make for my grandson. I think I will try to wrap some stiff wire around dowl and embed in flat clay piece as well and wrap clay all around. Thanks for the great idea!
